If your mobile phone contract is over, or you have bought a mobile phone outright, then you’re a perfect fit for one of the many SIM Only Plans that are on offer from all of the most popular mobile phone service providers.
When you sign up for a BYO Mobile Plan, you are able to get a lot better deal as the provider doesn’t need to subsidise the cost of your phone as part of your package.
The best thing about most SIM Only Plans is the flexibility of not being locked in to a contract, which means you’re free to leave at any time and transfer your number to another provider if the plan you’ve picked isn’t working out for you.
Choosing The Right SIM Only Plan
BYO Phone Plans are quite varied, from $0 per month plans with cheap call rates like the Amaysim As You Go plan through to great value unlimited plans that are designed for heavy mobile phone users.
Some are postpaid (monthly billed), some are prepaid (using recharge vouchers or your credit card to pay for your service in advance) and others like Amaysim allow you to pick which billing method suits your needs.
In order to pick the right plan for your needs, it’s important to know how you use (or intend to use) your mobile. If you already have a service, take a look over your recent bills and you can work out how many minutes of calls you make, how many SMS you send in a month and how much data you use.
Best Low Usage BYO Mobile Plans
If you only make occasional calls, then one of these low usage BYO phone plans are perfect for your needs. Plans in this category are a mix of postpaid and prepaid services.
Our #1 Pick is Amaysim’s As You Go plan. We like this plan because of its low call rates, access to the Optus 3G/4G network and extremely low usage requirements – you only need to make one call every 90 days if you’re on postpaid, or recharge once every 90 days on prepaid, to keep your service active. Amaysim also operates an Australian based customer service team that have won several awards.
Best Medium Usage BYO Phone Plans
If you’re a little more frequent user of your mobile, then these medium usage BYO mobile plans could be well suited to your needs.
Our #1 Pick is Amaysim’s Flexi plan. We like this plan because it gives you the flexibility of spending some of your included $19.90 on an additional data pack to top up your data allocation, and the call rates are exceptionally cheap – so if you end up making a lot of calls in a month, you won’t be punished with excessively inflated call rates.
Best Heavy Usage SIM Only Plans
If you and your mobile phone are almost inseparable, these SIM only plans for heavy usage are perfect. They include larger data allocations and unlimited calls.
Our #1 Pick is Amaysim’s Unlimited plan. With unlimited calls and text messages plus a choice of a 5 GB or 7 GB data allocation that you can use to tether to your laptop and get online wherever you are, the Unlimited plan from Amaysim represents amazing value. The other great thing about Amaysim is that unlike many of the other low cost carriers, their customer service team is based here in Australia.
What Is A SIM Card?
SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module and it contains information to identify your service to a mobile network when inserted in a compatible device.
You can remove the SIM card from your phone and insert it in another one, provided that it is unlocked, and continue to access your service including making and receiving calls on your mobile number.
When you change providers, your new provider will issue you with a new SIM card that will be used to provide you with service on that new network.
What Is A SIM Only Plan?
Rather than signing up for a mobile plan that includes a phone, a SIM Only plan is just that – your new provider will issue you with a new SIM card that you will need to insert into your existing phone.
This relies on you having an existing phone that is unlocked, or purchasing a new phone outright to use with the service.
On a SIM only plan, you get access to all the same features that you would get if you signed up on a 24 month contract, except you will need to supply your own phone.
The big advantage of a SIM only plan is that you will typically get more included calls and data and will typically pay less than if you signed for a 2 year contract with a new phone.
Why Choose A SIM Only Plan?
There are a number of reasons you might choose to sign up for a SIM Only plan rather than purchasing a new mobile phone on a 24 month contract.
- If your contract is over and you’re still happy with your current mobile phone – by switching to a SIM only plan, you can save money.
- If you prefer to purchase your phones outright and not be locked in to a contract.
- If you do not use your phone often – the monthly fees on most contracts are fairly high.
- If you will only be in Australia for a short period of time, and do not want to sign up to a 24 month contract.
- If you want to have the freedom to change to a different provider if you are having coverage issues or your usage patterns change.
